Protective Blood Penetration Resistance Test

A protective blood penetration resistance test is performed for medical safety. It ensures that the protective cloth can resist synthetic blood penetration. This test shows the effectiveness of protective cloth against blood-borne pathogens and other fluids. It simulates the impact of synthetic blood on cloth.

Why Protective Blood Penetration Resistance Test is Important?

It is a very important test because we can see diseases like HIV, Aids, and Hepatitis C are growing due to globalization. These diseases spread due to viruses in the blood.

So, to protect doctors from such patients, ourselves, and others from these types of diseases, it is essential to check the quality of protective cloth used in contact with blood. So, let’s see how this test works and which type of machine and standard are used to perform it.

Which Standards Determine Blood Penetration Testing?

Blood penetration testing is determined by the American Standard of Testing Methods (ASTM) and the International Standardization of Organization (ISO). There are also other standards, but these are mostly used for this test.

These standards define the guidelines that should be followed for using the clothing material in the medical sector and to ensure the safety of doctors, patients, and users.

ASTM F1670

The ASTM F1670 method defines the material resistance to synthetic blood against penetration. It ensures the material quality as protective clothing and gives an idea of its resistance properties to synthetic blood.

ASTM F1671

This method helps to understand how much material is resistant to blood-borne pathogens. It ensures the quality of gloves and gowns that are used in the medical sector.

To perform this test a harmless virus called surrogate microbe is prepared and applied on the protective clothing to check it resistance to penetration.

ISO 16603:2004

The ISO 16603 method is similar to ASTM 1670. It defines the protective clothing material’s resistance to blood and body fluids. Synthetic blood is used to perform testing.

ISO 16604:2004

The ISO 16604 method is similar to ASTM 1671. It determines the resistance of the protective clothing to blood, body fluids, and blood-borne pathogens. This method uses Phi-X 174 bacteriophage to perform lab-scale testing.

The name of this machine is Protective Clothing Synthetic Blood Penetration Tester. It is specially designed for medical safety purposes. This instrument complies with ASTM-F903, ASTM F 1670, and ISO16603 standards.

Sample Preparation

Sample Preparation

For testing, cut a sample from protective clothing. We will take 03 samples from different positions. The sample template is 75 × 75 mm in dimension. It is placed on the fabric and cutting is done according to the template.

We will note the sample weight and thickness using a thickness meter and weighing balance. It will help us understand the trend of results by changing the different types of samples.

Sample Mounting

We will install the sample according to the standard. Place the 01 mm specimen into the basement of the cell body. The outer surface of the sample faces towards the sample tank.

You must decide whether to install the sports network using the experimental method for sample mounting.

No installation is required for this experiment; place the gasket and flange cover. Use pressure washers, washers and nuts. We will close it with closure, and this part is used as a safety shield.

There are four nuts and washers, so tighten these manually as much as possible. We will use the digital torque wrench here. As mentioned in the ASTM F 1670 testing method, we will pull it here.

Adjust the torque of the torsion wrench to 13.6, tighten all four nuts, and ensure no leakage by pretesting. Cover the transparent cover, spatter, and close the drain valve.

Machine Testing Procedure

Turn on the power switch and Click parameter settings. The language of the Darong Protective Blood Penetration Resistance Tester instrument can be set in English. Choose a testing standard. After you have selected it, save it and click the test interface.

Now, we will use synthetic blood according to the standard configuration of about 60 milliliters. Unplug the connector. We will use a syringe to add 60 mL of synthetic blood here.

You have to push it in and make it better. When you do the work, you have to put pressure on it because of the air pressure. Otherwise, it will come out. So we have to do it using according to the standard method.

Once the 60 milliliters of blood are injected into the chamber, plug it back into the connector. Reset and start testing at each end of the specified pressure and time interval. Obtain the sample through the transparent cover for blood exudation.

Now If the liquid is found to penetrate, stop the test and recall the time and pressure of the failure. If you don’t see any liquid penetrating, continue with the next test time and pressure schedule. The sample is qualified if no liquid or characteristic discoloration occurs during the test.

The testing has been completed. We had noted the parameters and time when the synthetic blood started showing penetration. Make the test report according to the standard.

Clean the Instrument

Open the drain valve, and then drain the blood. Remove the loading sample device and clean it. Be sure to remove the residual of blood.

Conclusion

Protective Blood Penetration Resistance Test defines the protective clothing material’s resistance to blood, body fluids, and blood-borne pathogens. To perform this test Protective Clothing Synthetic Blood Penetration Tester is used on a lab scale.

This test is specially designed for the medical sector to ensure the safety of people from diseases like HIV, Aids, and Hepatitis C that are growing due to globalization. These diseases spread due to viruses in the blood.

Why is the Protective Blood Penetration Resistance Test Important?

This test is specially designed for the medical sector to ensure the safety of people from diseases like HIV, Aids and Hepatitis C that are growing due to globalization. These diseases spread due to viruses in the blood.

Which Standards Determine Blood Penetration Testing?

Blood penetration testing is determined by the American Standard of Testing Methods (ASTM) and the International Standardization of Organization (ISO). These standards are used to determine the blood penetration testing. ASTM F1670, ASTM F1671, ISO 16603:2004, ISO 16604:2004

What is the difference between 16603:2004 & 16604:2004?

The ISO 16603 method is similar to ASTM 1670. It defines the protective clothing material’s resistance to blood and body fluids. At the same time, the ISO 16604 method is identical to the ASTM 1671 standard. This method uses Phi-X 174 bacteriophage to perform lab-scale testing.

What should be the sample size for ISO16603?

The sample size of protective clothing should be 75 × 75 mm for Blood Penetration Testing. Specimen thickness and weight should be measured before being applied to the tester.

How do we know in ASTM F1670 that testing has been completed?

In ASTM F1670, If the liquid is found to penetrate, stop the test and recall the time and pressure of the failure. If you don’t see any liquid penetrating, continue with the next test time and pressure schedule.

How much synthetic blood is used in ISO16603?

There are 60 milliliters of synthetic blood, and it is injected into the chamber through the syringe.
