Test Procedure of Martindale Test Using YG(B)401 Martindale Tester

This Martindale Tester is suitable for testing the pilling and abrasion resistance of fabrics using the Martindale method. Applicable standards: ASTM D4970, ISO 12945-2, GB/T4802.1, and other Martindale testing standards.

Martindale Pilling Test Procedure

Principles of Pilling Resistance Test

1. Circular specimens are rubbed against the fabric of the same material under a given pressure, following a Lissajous motion trajectory, commonly known as the Martindale rub. After reaching the specified number of cycles, the Martindale pilling grade of the specimen is assessed.
1.1 It is recommended to use the decrement counter of this abrasion resistance testing machine for a more intuitive operation. Turn on the instrument power switch and set the data to the number of friction cycles required by the Martindale abrasion test method standard.
1.2 Prepare the specimen and abrasive according to the standard method.
1.3 Place the specimens according to the instructions in the manual.
1.4 Once the Lissajous motion trajectory specifications are confirmed to be accurate, touch the start button. The Martindale tester will begin operating and stop automatically when the friction count reaches zero.
1.5 Remove the specimen and compare it to the standard sample in the rating box to assess the degree of pilling for each specimen using the Martindale pilling tester.

Principles of Abrasion Resistance Test

2. Circular fabric specimens are rubbed against standard abrasives under a certain pressure, following a Lissajous motion trajectory, until the specimens are damaged. The abrasion resistance of the fabric is indicated by the number of cycles it withstands before damage, as measured by the Martindale abrasion tester.
2.1 It is recommended to use the increment counter of this fabric abrasion tester for a more intuitive operation. Turn on the instrument power switch and set the data to the number of friction cycles required by the Martindale rub test method standard.
2.2 Prepare the standard abrasive, standard padding, and specimens according to the standard method.
2.3 Place the specimens according to the instructions in the manual.
2.4 Once the Lissajous motion trajectory specifications are confirmed to be accurate, touch the start button. The Martindale abrasion testing machine will begin operating and stop automatically when the preset number of friction cycles is reached.
2.5 Observe the wear degree of each specimen and estimate the number of additional friction cycles needed for continued testing.
2.6 Record the cumulative friction data for each workstation.

4. Maintenance and Care
The instrument casing should be reliably grounded, with a grounding resistance of ≤1Ω.
After daily use, promptly clean the attachments and transmission parts of lint, debris, yarn, and oil stains, and turn off the power.
