Understanding Yellowing Fabric: Why Good Textiles Go Bad

The gradual shift in the white of pastel fabrics to a yellowish tone over time is called yellowing. This issue can occur during manufacturing, shipping or long-term storage. This permanent discolouration is very difficult to reverse, and this causes material and financial losses. The causes are complex, involving different chemical reactions, environmental exposure and the properties of the fibers.

Yellowing of the fabric is the combination of multiple chemical and physical phenomena that textile labs must identify and isolate.

Phenolic Yellowing: The Storage Scourge

This is one of the most damaging and commercially significant causes, commonly referred to as storage yellowing.

  • The Chemistry: The main cause is volatile hindered phenols, such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which is used as an antioxidant in plastic packaging, cardboard, and textile finishes. These phenols are absorbed by the fabric. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the air, from vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions and poorly ventilated warehouses, act as oxidising agents. NOx reacts with the phenols and forms a yellow compound called Quinone methide.
  • The Trigger: Due to the reaction’s dependency on packaging and storage conditions, the fabric yellowing test often simulates warehouse environments. Control packaging material is the key to passing anti-yellowing tests.

A process in which ultraviolet (UV) light exposure causes chemical breakdown in fibers called photodegradation.

  • The Mechanism: UV rays break chemical bonds in fibers, which form chromophores that absorb blue light and reflect yellow, which causes the  yellow appearance of the fabric
  • Fiber Sensitivity: Light-sensitive amino acids like tryptophan and tyrosine are found on wool and silk. UV ageing tests are essential for products, such as outdoor fabrics, curtains and carpets that face prolonged sunlight exposure.

White fabrics often depend on Fluorescent Whitening Agents (FWAs) to appear bright white

  • The Problem: FWAs absorb UC light and emit blue light in the visible region to mask natural yellow tone, but they degrade under the heat of strong oxidising agents like chlorine bleach, revealing the fabric’s natural yellow.
  • Chemical Residues: Unwashed or unremoved chemical particles from dyeing and finishing, like softeners, resins or improper scouring agents, can also react with air over time to produce yellowing.

Preventing textile yellowing is a major economic concern, which requires strict quality control and active measures throughout the supply chain. A textile testing laboratory plays an important role in predicting and preventing these issues.

Essential Testing Methods

The textile industry relies on standardised, accelerated tests that simulate real-world conditions. Different types of anti-yellowing testing are performed in textile testing laboratories to get rid of the yellowing of the fabric.

  • Phenolic Yellowing Test 

This is the most common method, conducted in accordance with the international standard ISO 105-X18.

  • Procedure: A fabric sample is arranged in a “Sandwich: form, placed between a phenol-treated test paper and a control fabric known to yellow. This assembly is sealed in a film made of polyethene and heated at 50 degrees Celsius for 16 hours to accelerate phenol volatilisation.
  • Evaluation: Change of color is assessed using a grey scale or with the help of spectrophotometer to measure the Yellowness Index (ΔYI).

UV Ageing test (Light fastness)

This test is performed to evaluate resistance to photo-yellowing.

  • Procedure: Different samples are exposed to Xenon-arc or UV lamp under controlled conditions such as temperature and humidity, using filters to simulate indoor and outdoor lighting.
  • Evaluation: Change of color is measured using the blue wool scale. This helps manufacturers choose UV-Stable fibers and additives for sun-exposed products.

Gas Fading Test: (Air pollution) 

With the help of this test, we can measure yellowing caused by nitrogen oxides (NOx), especially in synthetic fibers.

  • Procedure: Samples are exposed to NOx gases in a controlled chamber with controlled temperature and humidity.
  • Evaluation: Shade change is compared to a standard to predict performance in a polluted environment.

Migration Strategies: Preserving Whiteness 

A successful anti-yellowing test result reflects preventive actions taken across the supply chain.

Chemical Control 

  • Anti-yellowing agents: Special chemicals should be applied to neutralise NOx and other oxidising agents before they react with phenols or fibers
  • Non-Phenolic Finishes: Almost all the textile industries are shifting away from phenolic softeners and resins, replacing them with safer alternatives.
  • Complete Rinsing: The complete removal of chemical particles after dyeing or printing is essential to eliminate residues that may cause yellowing.

Packaging and logistics

  • BHT-Free Materials: Always try to use certified packaging materials, which are free from BHT or phenolic compounds.
  • Controlled Storage: Textile articles should be stored in cool, dry and well-ventilated areas to decrease the chances of NOx buildup and reduce reaction rates. Products made from sensitive fibers should be shielded from fluorescent lighting.

Consumer Education

  • Avoid Chlorine Bleach: Write care instructions on the care label to prevent chlorine bleach, as it degrades optical brighteners and causes yellowing in nylon, spandex, and silk. Oxygen-based bleaches are recommended.
  • Proper Drying and Ironing: If you dry your textile article with high heat, there may be Thermal yellowing. Garments should be dried at a low temperature and ironed according to fiber type.
